48 Hours of Twitter

This is a funny video that I recently found on youtube about twitter! In my Public Relations class we were assigned to spend 48 hours on twitter and tweet at least 10 times. At first I was a little worried about this because I have not kept up with twitter much since we first were assigned to use it. But, it has been a blast! I have now downloaded tweetdeck and twhirl. Both are so much fun! I am still trying to figure out how to do everything, but so far I am addicted. It is amazing how many people are using twitter. The first time we were told to use twitter I found it weird when others would ask to ‘follow me’ or I’d ask to ‘follow them’ but that is the whole point. You can follow whom ever you choose and they can choose if they want to follow you back. My favorite so far is Paula Deen! I love her cooking show on Food Network. Now that I am following her on twitter I think it is so neat to be able to keep up with all that she is doing! Also, I am not good about watching the news and keeping up to date on what is going on, so I follow many different news stations and TV shows to catch up with everything such as CNN, The Today Show, and The View! Since I am from just north of Atlanta I also love watching The Atlanta Braves! Recently they have been showing the games on Peachtree TV, which Northland Cable does not carry so I keep up using twitter! It is a fun way to follow and keep up with the game! You can also follow them @BravesMLB. Another thing I have enjoyed is using the ’search’ and finding different PHI MU’s from other schools and being able to direct message with them about different things they have going on with their chapter.

All in all, I have officially ‘fallen for twitter.’ I want to check it every second now! I am learning new stuff everyday and I will definitely continue to use twitter.

Although I have never met Brian Shamberger, I think it is so great that he recommended me to others! I really feel like I have learned so much and I hope to help others via twitter!

Interview with a PR Professional

n51100847_31627717_3646

I interviewed Shanna Vaughan. She works at Industrial Properties Group in Gainesville, Georgia. I have known Shanna for a long time and I take all of her advice seriously. She has a great job and enjoys what she is doing everyday!

*What made you want to work in the PR field?

I enjoy working with the public and using my creative side at the same time to deliver a message from a company or business.  Whether that be through words or visuals aspects, I feel like I am using both my analytical and innovative thought processes at the same time.

*What made you choose this specific job?

I was currently employed at the time of graduation and enjoyed my job, so I decided to stay on with my employer.  During this time of hiring freezes with so many companies, I am very lucky to have made that decision at the time.

*What exactly do you do everyday?

I primarily construct or edit announcements the company releases and resolve issues or answer questions with the public. I also keep our database of properties and all contacts up to date and create and assist in any other public relations and marketing material.

*What was your major in college?

Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing.

*Why did you not choose PR?

PR was not an option of a major at the college I attended.

*What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy interacting with customer and clients on a daily basis whether that is resolving issues, answering inquiries, or communicating information.

*How long do you plan to stay in this type of job?

I always plan on staying in a job where its objective is to promote better communities in a smart and effective way.  As far as with the same company, I think it’s inhibiting to say that one is not always open and looking for something better.

*If you could change anything about your job, what would it be?

I would choose to interact with more people on a daily basis in directly solving their issues.  As of right now, I more indirectly solve issues they may or may not know about.

*What recommendations do you have for me as a PR major?

I would definitely recommend in today’s market gain as much experience and show initiative in wanting to learn before graduating.  Express the experience you learn in your major and skills you have throughout everyday life to promote yourself.

Managing the Gray–Hosted by C.C Chapman

In my class we were told to listen to a 1 hour Podcast and answer questions based on what we got from it. I choose to listen to Managing the Gray. But first, I must say that this podcast was very unique to say the least. I have never listened to one before, but it seemed like it was going so fast and it was hard to catch on with everything that was said. From this I learned that the secret to social media is to brea thru the clutter and get attention. Learn what works. Everyone loves to feel a “connection. When doing a campaign, make sure that the people feel a connection with it so they will TALK about it. Such as tweeting, facebooking, or getting it out any way that they can. A great example is super-bowl ad’s. I was surprised to find out how important spreading the message thru social media is. SPREAD THE WORD. Blogging is a good way to get out what you are trying to say. All in all, keep in touch with friends. Connect with everyone that you know because you never know where that may get you later on in life.

British University Offers Master’s Degree in Facebook

A British university is offering a master’s degree in Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, but it will cost students more than $6,200.
For $6,275 Birmingham City University in the U.K. will teach students how to blog, set up podcasts and make the most of the social media websites for marketing.
“It’s not for freaks or IT geeks. The tools learned on this course will be accessible to many people,” convenor Jon Hickman told The Daily Mail.
“It will definitely appeal to students looking to go into professions including journalism and PR.”
But sudent Jamie Waterman, said it would be a waste of the university’s resources.
“It’s of no interest to me whatsoever. Virtually all of the content of this course is so basic it can be self-taught,” he said.
